History
The flowers of Hawthorn were thought to have magical powers. They were not to be brought in the house for fear that they would cause a death in the family.
It is also thought that Hawthorn may have been the source of the “Crown of Thorns” that Jesus wore.
Traditional Use
The fruits of Hawthorn have been used in several different cultures to make a variety of foods, including haw flakes, jams, jellies, candies. Some people eat the tender young leaves in salads.
The leaves, flowers, and berries have all been used for medicinal purposes, and there is often research into this use.
